Oktoberfest Contest courtesy of CityEats!

CityEats is sponsoring a contest for my awesome readers. In honor of Oktoberfest, we will be giving away a $100 dinner for two at South Street's famous Brauhaus Schmitz. That's a lot of schnitzel! In order to enter, all you need to do is comment on THIS POST about your favorite thing German. It could be a car, a food, a beer, or a trip. The category is pretty broad, and we encourage creativity. On October 15th, all valid entries (as determined by me) will be assigned a number, and a winner drawn at random through Random.org. The winner will then simply make a reservation through the easy-to-use CityEats site, and they will then be eating and drinking their way through some of the best German food in the city – for free. If you don't want to create a profile in order to enter with a comment, shoot me an email with your comment so I can contact you if you are the big winner. One comment, and you could be drinking liters of beer and eating all types of the best wurst.

Traveling in Germany- My girlfriend and I rented an Opel and drove from Frankfurt to Munchen on the Autobahn and Romantische Strasse, transporting through time during my visits to the medieval fortress town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle. During the Berlin portion of my Germany trip, we stayed in a boat hostel near Kreuzberg and walked endlessly on the streets of Berlin while drinking countless 1.80 euro German beers that I have never seen before, eating many cheap yet excellent rotisserie chickens, doner kebabs, and currywursts, and seeing some of the best graffiti art that I've ever seen. Oh yeah, I also saw an elephant boink another elephant in the Berlin Zoo. Only in Germany!

I'm all in for this one! My mother's side is all German - you have to love our way of making the most delicious, most unhealthy meals out there, pairing it with a great dunkel. Hits the spot!

Sure I could take this opportunity to praise beautiful and talented German actresses that I have admired watching over the years, like Diane Kruger in the timeless and historically accurate ‘National Treasure’ movies, or Michelle Trachtenberg’s Harriet the Spy series that always left me guessing.

But no, its German actor Michael Fassbenders’ repeated full frontal endowment in the movie ‘Shame’ that has now forever kept me away from sausages, bratwurst…. you get the BIG idea.

I can envision him now sitting alone in the corner of Brauhaus Schmitz, drinking out of a boot filled with beer laughing as my guests and I struggle to engulf these overgrown casings of meat.

Well Mr. Fassbender I will not give you the pleasure! If I were to win this contest we would feast modestly on schnitzel, potato pancakes, and sauerkraut. And NO, we do not care for the Bavarian pretzel you sent for the table…sicko!

I have two favorites from I which I cannot decide a winner. During a trip to Europe as a teenager I visited the quaint town of Baaden Baaden, Germany (may have spelled town name wrong). In town was the most beautiful bath house/spa/gym I have ever seen. The marble floors and pillars, beautiful floral arrangements, friendly people and overall tranquil surroundings made for one of the most suprisingly good times I've ever had. Picture multiple olympic-sized lap pools, jacuzzis, cool-down pools, and even a kid's section with slides and games, all under one roof. Then picture an environment where no one is running and screaming, kids are well-behaved, and people from all over the world converse in a multitude of languages. While sitting in one of the 25 plus jacuzzis, I struck up a conversation with a Brit, a German couple, two African men, and a Spanish national, all of whom worked in the US. I actually still keep in touch with a couple of them, and we always remark at how random our initial encounter had been.

Second, I went to a beer garden in downtown LA in late 2011 that blew my mind. On the roof of one of the medium-sized skyscrapers in LA was this beautifully designed beer garden which also included unique lounge chairs, a pool, and multiple non-German inspired bar areas. Across the street, they used the side of the adjacent building as a projection screen, and had a Monday Night Football game playing while I stood on the roof with a HUGE glass of German brew. Add in three lovely women serving the beer(in their best German inspired attire) and a very low-key atmosphere, this place was the highlight of my very quick LA business trip. Truthfully I cannot recall the name of either the bath house in Germany or the beer garden in LA, but I promise you two FANTASTIC experiences should you stumble upon either place like I did.

Since Rammstein has already been mentioned, I'll have to go with my next favorite German thing: The Scorpions. Rock you like a hurricane!

Without a doubt my favorite German thing has to be Schloss Neuschwanstein atop the Alps in Southern Germany...perched on a mountain above a pristine lake, Mad Koenig Ludwig's prized piece of real estate is absolutely surreal...and also the inspiration for Walt Disney's Cinderella Castle at Disney World and Disney Land...one of the most recognizable symbols worldwide, but known for Mickey and Minnie and not Germany...GIVE DEUTSCHLAND SOME RESPECT!

Bastian Schweinsteiger. Not only is he one of the best soccer players in the world, probably the best at his position (the Champions League Final against Chelsea aside) but he has maybe the most German name ever.

Maybe it's all the beer, but German folks are the nicest, friendliest people. One minute you're strangers sharing a table at a bierhaus, the next you're planning a vacation together. Prost!

I spent a lot of time in Germany as an exchange student in high school, and a study abroad student in college. German language and culture has been a huge part of my life for the last 10 years, ever since I started learning it in school. It has brought me friends from all over the world, and allowed me to create long lasting bonds across international borders.

I am a frequent patron of Brauhaus Schmitz, most recently for their annual Oktoberfest this past weekend. I would love the gift card!

Thanks,
Dan

My favorite thing German is my grandfather Hans. He always smelled like dried leaves, wet flannel and Old Spice. Every weekday morning he would ride his lawnmower, through traffic, to our house to watch my sister and me before school. He was a German who fought for the Allies during the war and was my biggest fan. Love you, Poppa!

There is a place called Popeye's in Lake Geneva WI that I love. Not the fast food chicken Popeye's, this place is older and is paid by the chicken place every year for the right to the name. It has an awesome Octoberfest menu and specials. Real deal corned beef or Lamb stew for $3!

My greatest memory of Germany and her food was eating an enormous bowl of spatzle that I bought off of a street vendor outside of the ruins of the Kaiserpfalz (castle) in Kaiserswerth, Dusseldorf about 15 years ago. It was so tender and moist. The best I've ever had. Delicious. mmmmmnumnummmmmm
